From Christian Ecumenism to Interfaith Dialogue

I think everyone realizes as they look at the trajectory that ecumenism expands almost naturally into interfaith work. Karl Rahner pointed out in a very famous article, “Towards a Fundamental Interpretation of Vatican II,” that Nostra Aetate signaled that the relationship of Christianity to other faiths has become the new frontier. People who were trained as I was and learned from the Christian ecumenists how to build those bridges are drawn to building the other bridges, and the reason is this: every voyage into another Christian communion or into another faith, if it is done properly in the spirit of Lonergan—searching for truth, not thinking that you have it (who could ever have truth, for heaven’s sake!)—will always or inevitably result in mutual illumination. As we find in ecumenical circles, and as part of George’s testimony, and as we find in interfaith circles, you are given a richer understanding of your own faith as you try to understand others. In the world in which we live today it has become very important in neighborhoods. [People may ask,] how am I going to raise my children in this totally permissive Western society? You find out as a Muslim family moves in next to you that you are happy to find somebody who has faith! That it is a different faith is less important than that they have faith and out of that faith, they begin to raise their children—the same with Jews.
